Willow Pattern – The Beautiful C64 Adventure Inspired by a Chinese Legend
️ Willow Pattern (1985) – Commodore 64 Oriental Action Maze Adventure Released in 1985 by Mr. Micro Ltd. and published by Firebird Software for the Commodore 64, Willow Pattern is an atmospheric action-maze game inspired by the famous Chinese porcelain design of the same name. Known in some regions as The Willow Pattern Adventure, the game blends exploration, timing, and tension with a distinctive oriental visual style. You control Chang, a humble clerk navigating a multi-screen garden maze filled with danger. The objective is to locate the key, rescue Princess Koong-Shee, and escape by boat, all while avoiding relentless samurai enemies who hurl swords that can be dodged, collected, and reused as weapons. Resource management and positioning are crucial to survival. Gameplay alternates between overhead maze exploration and focused action sequences. One of the most memorable sections is the bridge-jump sequence, where Chang must leap across stepping stones as giant hands reach up from the water below, adding pressure and variety to the pacing.
