The Way of the Exploding Fist – 18 Moves from ONE Button on the C64
️ The Way of the Exploding Fist (1985) – Commodore 64 Martial Arts Fighting Classic Released in 1985 by Beam Software for the Commodore 64, The Way of the Exploding Fist is a landmark martial arts fighting game that helped define the genre on home computers. Inspired by the arcade hit Karate Champ, it introduced a more measured, skill-based approach to one-on-one combat, placing emphasis on timing, spacing, and precise control. You compete in karate matches where victory is achieved by scoring two full points, represented by yin-yang symbols. The control system offers 18 distinct moves, including punches, kicks, blocks, and acrobatic somersaults, all executed through deliberate joystick movements. As the game progresses, opponents become faster and more disciplined, testing both reflexes and technique across a range of atmospheric locations. A memorable highlight is the bonus stage, where you attempt to defeat a charging bull with a single perfectly timed strike—a direct nod to martial arts legend Mas Oyama.
