The New Zealand Story C64 – Did Ocean Nail the Arcade Conversion?
️ The New Zealand Story (1989) – Commodore 64 Arcade Platform Classic Released by Ocean Software in 1989, The New Zealand Story brought Taito's colourful arcade platformer to the C64, putting you in control of Tiki the Kiwi as he sets off to rescue his kidnapped friends. It looks cute. It sounds cheerful. And then it starts trying to kill you. In this video I'm taking another look at Ocean's Commodore 64 conversion — the graphics, Jonathan Dunn's memorable music, the increasingly vicious difficulty and, most importantly, whether the C64 version still holds up today. The original arcade game arrived in 1988, with Ocean bringing the conversion to the Commodore 64 the following year. Despite the obvious limitations of an 8-bit machine compared with Taito's coin-op hardware, the C64 version retains the colourful scrolling levels, weapons, airborne enemies and increasingly demanding platforming that made the original so distinctive..
