Super Gridder – The Early C64 Arcade Game Inspired by Amidar
Released in 1983 by Terminal Software for the Commodore 64, Super Gridder is a minimalist arcade-style puzzle game developed and programmed by R. W. Stevens. Also published by Microdigital Ltd. , it delivers a deceptively simple concept built around precision, timing, and risk management. Gameplay takes place on a single 8×8 grid where you control a character tracing the grid’s boundaries. Successfully enclosing a square fills it in, pushing you closer to completion, but danger lurks within the grid itself. Scorpions roam the interior, and a single touch costs a life, forcing careful planning and steady movement. The challenge comes from balancing speed and accuracy under constant time pressure. Complete the grid before the timer expires to earn bonus points, but rush too much and mistakes can quickly end a run. Every movement matters, turning simple line-drawing into a tense arcade puzzle.
