Sheep in Space – Jeff Minter, C64 Shooting and Pure Woolly Madness

️ Sheep in Space (1984) – Commodore 64 Horizontal Sci-Fi Shoot-’Em-Up Released in 1984 by Llamasoft and developed by Jeff Minter, Sheep in Space is a horizontally scrolling shoot-’em-up that puts a surreal twist on classic arcade action. You control a genetically engineered combat sheep defending a planetary colony from waves of invading droids. Inspired by Defender, the game spans 48 levels, each requiring the destruction of 16 enemies before progressing. Alongside a standard blaster and shield, the sheep can perform a “DJump,” instantly warping to the nearest hostile for rapid attacks and emergency escapes. A distinctive survival mechanic adds pressure, as the sheep must regularly land on grassy areas to feed when hunger levels drop. Managing energy is critical, as becoming famished weakens you, while overeating leads to an explosive end. This balance between combat and survival creates a rhythm that keeps you constantly engaged.
