Shadow of the Beast – 12 Layers of Parallax: This Was the Amiga Showing Off

️ Shadow of the Beast (1989) – Commodore Amiga Dark Fantasy Action Platformer Released in 1989 by Reflections Interactive and published by Psygnosis for the Commodore Amiga, Shadow of the Beast casts you as Aarbron, a once-human warrior transformed into a monstrous servant of the evil Maletoth. After fragments of his past resurface, Aarbron sets out on a brutal journey of revenge across a hostile and surreal world. Gameplay unfolds across more than 350 side-scrolling screens filled with enemies, traps, and environmental hazards. Progress relies heavily on precise movement, sharp reflexes, and memorisation, with limited room for error. Combat is deliberate and punishing, reinforcing the game’s unforgiving tone and demanding mastery from you. The game is renowned for pushing the Amiga hardware to its limits, featuring stunning multi-layer parallax scrolling and rich 128-colour visuals that give its alien landscapes a distinctive, dreamlike quality.
