About this publisher

Infocom grew from the MIT mainframe adventure Zork and became one of the defining publishers of parser-driven interactive fiction. Its games were designed around a portable virtual-machine approach that allowed the same adventures to reach many home computers.

Documented company facts

  • The Infocom historical archive traces Zork to work by members of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science, including Marc Blank, Dave Lebling and Tim Anderson.
  • The mainframe Zork project was substantially developed during the late 1970s before its ideas became the foundation for Infocom's commercial adventures.
  • The Centre for Computing History preserves Infocom adventures for the Commodore 64, including The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Leather Goddesses of Phobos.
