Pole Position – Could the Commodore 64 Handle Namco’s Arcade Racing Classic?
️ Pole Position (1984) – Commodore 64 Arcade Formula One Racing Classic Originally developed by Namco and released in arcades in 1982, Pole Position arrived on the Commodore 64 in 1984 as a home conversion of one of the most influential racing games ever made. You take control of a Formula One car and attempt to qualify for pole position by completing a fast, clean lap of the iconic Fuji Racetrack. Gameplay is split into two phases, beginning with a solo time trial where precision and memorisation are essential. Successfully qualifying unlocks the main race, where you must compete against rival cars while managing speed, positioning, and a strict time limit. Collisions with other vehicles or trackside objects quickly end a promising run. The Commodore 64 version recreates the arcade’s behind-the-car perspective with smooth forward scrolling and recognisable track landmarks.
