Infernal Runner – The C64 Platformer Where Dying Was Half the Attraction

Released in 1985 by Loriciels, Infernal Runner is a darkly satirical platform game for the Commodore 64 developed by Michel Koell and Yves Korta. Set inside a nightmarish labyrinth, the game drops you into a surreal world of deadly traps, grotesque surprises, and pitch-black humour, where survival is never guaranteed. Gameplay is deliberately non-linear, allowing you to move freely between interconnected rooms packed with hazards. The objective is to locate keys and open chests in order to escape, all while managing a constantly draining hunger meter that forces you to hunt for food scattered throughout the maze. Every screen introduces new ways to die, often suddenly and brutally. Infernal Runner became infamous for its exaggerated death animations and macabre tone, which were strikingly graphic for the mid-1980s. Rather than discouraging failure, the game almost revels in it, turning death into part of the learning process.
