Grand Prix Simulator – Overhead Racing, Oil Slicks and Two Players… Was It a Simulator? | C64

️ Grand Prix Simulator (1987) – Commodore 64 Top-Down Formula Racing Classic Released in 1987 by Codemasters, Grand Prix Simulator delivers fast, accessible top-down racing on the Commodore 64. Developed by the Oliver Twins, it captures the thrill of high-speed circuit racing with a stripped-back design that focuses on precision, positioning, and momentum rather than realism. Races are viewed from above, giving you a clear view of upcoming corners, hazards, and rival cars. Steering and throttle control are easy to grasp, but mastering tight turns and avoiding costly collisions takes practice, especially as track layouts become more demanding. The C64 version stands out with bold colours, smooth scrolling, and plainly defined circuits that reward clean racing lines. Tracks feature sharp bends and narrow sections that punish mistakes, keeping races tense even with simple mechanics. A two-player mode adds to the fun, allowing head-to-head competition and making it ideal for quick, competitive sessions.
