Golden Axe – Could Sega’s Fantasy Brawler Survive the Commodore 64?

Released in 1990, Golden Axe brings Sega’s iconic fantasy brawler to the Commodore 64, tasking you with saving the land of Yuria from the evil Death Adder. You choose between Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, or Gilius Thunderhead, each offering different strengths and devastating magic attacks as you fight to reclaim the legendary Golden Axe. The core beat ’em up action remains intact, with side-scrolling combat, melee attacks, screen-clearing magic spells, and the ability to ride dragons for extra firepower. While the C64 version is single-player only and simplifies some elements from the arcade, the moment-to-moment combat still delivers that familiar Golden Axe rhythm. Hardware limitations mean fewer enemies on screen and reduced variety, but the fantasy atmosphere survives thanks to solid visuals and a strong soundtrack by Jeroen Tel. His take on the Golden Axe theme adds weight and nostalgia to the adventure.
