Go For The Gold – The £2.99 C64 Game That Reached UK No.1

Released by Americana in 1986, Go For The Gold is a multi-event Commodore 64 sports game featuring sprinting, hurdles, long jump, archery, diving and weightlifting. You can practice individual events or compete across the full programme, with up to six participants battling for the best scores. Some events demand the traditional left-and-right joystick treatment, while archery, diving and weightlifting rely more heavily on timing and technique. The game originally appeared in America as HESGames in 1984. That version was only available on disk in the UK and cost £27.95, leaving it competing with considerably cheaper sports games such as Daley Thompson’s Decathlon and Summer Games. Two years later, Americana brought it back under the new title Go For The Gold. The revised version was released on cassette for just £2.99, transforming a largely overlooked game into one of the biggest C64 budget successes of 1986.
