Fort Apocalypse – Rescue 16 Prisoners, Blow the Reactor… Then Escape on the C64

Released in 1982 by Synapse Software, Fort Apocalypse is a demanding multi-directional scrolling shooter for the Commodore 64. Developed by Steve Hales and ported by Joe Vierra, the game drops players into a vast underground fortress with a single goal: rescue prisoners and dismantle enemy installations while surviving relentless opposition. Players pilot a highly manoeuvrable rocket copter through sprawling caverns, contending with tight passages, gun turrets, and hostile forces attacking from all directions. Movement and combat require precision, as weapon controls change depending on the helicopter’s orientation, forcing players to think carefully about positioning and timing. A standout feature is the Navatron system, which provides a radar-style preview of upcoming threats beyond the visible screen. This adds a strategic layer rarely seen at the time, allowing players to plan routes and prepare for ambushes before entering dangerous areas.
