Fernandez Must Die – C64 Guerrilla Action with No Time to Breathe
Fernandez Must Die (1988), developed by Antony Crowther (Ratt) and published by Image Works, is a top-down vertical scrolling shooter for the Commodore 64. You play as a lone commando sent to overthrow the ruthless dictator Fernandez, who has seized control of the Republic of El Diablo. Your mission spans eight enemy bases, where you infiltrate buildings through underground tunnels, rescue prisoners, seize gold bars, and fight through waves of soldiers, vehicles, and landmines. Unlike many shooters of the era, the game mixes on-foot combat with vehicle sections, allowing you to take control of jeeps, motorcycles, and tanks. A standout feature is its cooperative vehicle mode, where two players can work together — one driving while the other fires. The C64 version features unlimited bullets, limited grenades, and large interconnected maps that encourage strategic progression between bases.
