Dragon’s Lair – How Did a LaserDisc Arcade Game End Up on the C64?
️ Dragon’s Lair (1986) – Commodore 64 Arcade Adventure Classic Released in 1986 by Software Projects for the Commodore 64, Dragon’s Lair is a home computer adaptation of Don Bluth’s groundbreaking laserdisc arcade phenomenon. You guide the heroic knight Dirk the Daring through a series of deadly traps and timing-based challenges as he attempts to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe. Rather than using full-motion video, the C64 version reimagines the cinematic adventure through hand-drawn sprites, animated sequences, and carefully timed gameplay events. This approach allowed the game to function within the system’s technical limits. The game was developed by John Darnell and Steve Birtles, with graphics by Nicole Baikaloff and music composed by Colin Porch. It also features the distinctive “Dragonload” tape-loading system, which enabled its large, multi-stage structure. Gameplay focuses on memorisation, quick reactions, and pattern recognition, requiring you to learn the correct inputs for each sequence in order to progress.
