Daley Thompson’s Decathlon – The C64 Game That Punished Joysticks
️ Daley Thompson’s Decathlon (1984) – Commodore 64 Olympic Multi-Event Sports Classic Released in 1984 by Ocean Software, Daley Thompson’s Decathlon brought the intensity of Olympic athletics to the Commodore 64 in a way few games had managed before. Officially licensed by double Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson, it challenges you to survive all ten events of the modern decathlon across two gruelling in-game days. Day one tests raw speed and power with the 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 metres. Day two raises the stakes with the 110 metre hurdles, pole vault, discus, javelin, and the exhausting 1500 metres. Each event demands qualifying standards, and failure costs one of your limited lives. Complete the full decathlon and the challenge resets with even tougher requirements. The gameplay is infamous for its joystick-waggling controls, where running speed is generated by rapidly moving the stick left and right.
