Cybernoid – The Hewson C64 Shooter That Gave You No Breathing Room

️ Cybernoid: The Fighting Machine (1988) – Commodore 64 Shoot’em-Up Action Released in 1988 by Hewson Consultants and programmed for the Commodore 64 by Nick Jones (based on Raffaele Cecco’s original design), Cybernoid: The Fighting Machine is a futuristic shoot ’em up in which players pilot a highly armed combat craft to reclaim stolen Federation cargo from deadly pirate strongholds. Divided into three flip-screen levels rather than smooth scrolling, the game demands tactical navigation and weapons selection as you confront gun turrets, homing missiles and hostile pirate vessels. Power-ups and built-in ship weapons — including shields, impact mines, bounce bombs and homing seekers — must be used thoughtfully to survive each screen and collect treasure before time runs out. The Commodore 64 version is especially revered for its colourful graphics that pushed the 8-bit system’s palette, and its atmospheric SID soundtrack composed by Jeroen Tel, giving it a distinctive audio-visual identity among classic C64 shooters.
