Creatures – Cute C64 Sprites, Horrible Little Torture Screens
️ Creatures (1990) – Commodore 64 Platform Adventure with Puzzles Released in 1990 by Apex Computer Productions and published by Thalamus Ltd, Creatures is one of the most technically impressive platform games on the Commodore 64. The title is an acronym for Clyde Radcliffe Exterminates All The Unfriendly Repulsive Earth-ridden Slime, hinting at the game’s playful tone beneath its demanding gameplay. You take control of Clyde Radcliffe, a member of the Fuzzy Wuzzies, as he explores a hostile island to rescue his captured friends from sinister demons. Traditional side-scrolling platforming is blended with puzzle-solving, most notably in the infamous “torture screens,” where careful planning and precise execution are required to save trapped creatures from elaborate mechanisms. Creatures is widely praised for its technical achievements, including smooth parallax scrolling, richly detailed environments, and expressive character animation.
