Cobra – Stallone’s 1986 Action Film Became a Commodore 64 Platformer

Released in 1986 by Ocean Software for the Commodore 64, COBRA adapts the hard-edged action of the Sylvester Stallone film into a side-scrolling arcade platformer. You step into the boots of Marion “Cobra” Cobretti, taking on the role of a relentless cop racing against time to rescue a kidnapped fashion model. The game unfolds across three distinct stages, moving from city streets to rural areas and finally an industrial factory complex. Progress depends on pushing forward through enemy-packed environments while dealing with hazards and tight jumps along the way. Combat centres around a mix of close-range and ranged weapons, including knives, firearms, and grenades, which must be collected and used carefully. Enemies are persistent, and success often comes down to learning patterns and managing limited space rather than brute force alone. While the presentation and controls were criticised at the time for feeling stiff and slow, COBRA still captures the raw attitude of its source material.
