Beyond the Forbidden Forest – The C64 Horror Game That Made Archery Terrifying

Released in 1985 by Paul Norman and published by Cosmi for the Commodore 64, Beyond the Forbidden Forest is an atmospheric sequel to the cult classic Forbidden Forest. Expanding on the original’s formula, the game introduces a pseudo-3D movement system known as “OmniDimension 4D,” allowing players to move their archer both horizontally and into the depth of the screen. Gameplay centres on surviving relentless waves of monstrous creatures using unlimited standard arrows. Every defeated enemy drops a valuable golden arrow, which must be collected in order to progress. These special arrows become essential later in the game, particularly during the dangerous cave sequences. Progression shifts in the second phase as players enter the caverns beneath the forest, where precision and resource management become critical. Here, powerful enemies such as the multi-headed hydra and the final boss, the Demogorgon, demand careful use of stored golden arrows and perfect timing.
