Beach-Head – Minefields, Tanks and a Final Fortress in One C64 Invasion
Released in 1983 by Access Software for the Commodore 64, Beach-Head is a landmark World War II action game that tasks players with launching a full-scale assault on a heavily fortified enemy island. Rather than focusing on a single gameplay style, the game unfolds across multiple distinct stages, each representing a different phase of the invasion. The opening sequence sees players navigating a fleet of ships through dangerous waters, choosing between a direct route under enemy fire or a hidden passage filled with mines and torpedoes. This is followed by a shift to anti-aircraft defence, where quick reflexes are required to protect the fleet from waves of enemy planes. Later stages introduce artillery combat against enemy battleships and a side-scrolling beach assault, where tanks must survive long enough to reach the enemy fortress. The number of tanks that make it ashore directly affects the difficulty of the final confrontation, adding strategic weight to earlier performance.
