Batman: The Caped Crusader – The C64 Batman Game Built Like a Comic Book

Released in 1988 for the Commodore 64, Batman: The Caped Crusader is an inventive action-adventure developed by Special FX Software and published by Ocean Software. Rather than following a conventional layout, the game presents its world like a living comic book, with each new area revealed as a fresh panel complete with captions and dramatic transitions. The game is split into two self-contained episodes. “A Bird in the Hand” pits Batman against the Penguin, while “A Fete Worse Than Death” focuses on the Joker. Both episodes mix side-scrolling combat with exploration and environmental interaction, requiring you to think as much as you fight. Batman’s moveset includes punches, kicks, and his iconic Batarang, but progress often depends on using the surroundings to your advantage. Solving light puzzles, timing actions correctly, and understanding each location’s layout are just as important as defeating enemies.
