Back to the Future – Can Marty Stop the Family Photo Fading on the C64?
Released in 1986 by Electric Dreams Software, Back to the Future brings the hit movie to home computers, casting players as Marty McFly in a race against time to secure his own future. Set across familiar locations from the film, the game challenges players to make sure George and Lorraine meet and fall in love before time runs out. Gameplay is split into several distinct sequences inspired by key movie moments. These include navigating town areas, a hoverboard-style chase, the Enchantment Under the Sea dance, and the dramatic clock tower finale. Each section must be completed within strict time limits, adding pressure to every decision and movement. Presentation leans heavily into the film licence, featuring digitised speech samples and a soundtrack that incorporates the instantly recognisable “The Power of Love” theme. These elements help capture the feel of the movie, even within the technical limits of the Commodore 64.
