Aztec Challenge – Could You Survive the C64’s Infamous Spear Gauntlet?

Released in 1983 by Cosmi and developed by Paul Norman, Aztec Challenge throws you into a relentless series of seven deadly trials inspired by ancient temple myths. Each challenge demands sharp reflexes, precise timing, and sheer endurance as you fight to survive rather than explore. The opening trial, The Gauntlet, sets the tone immediately as you sprint toward a distant temple while dodging and leaping over spears hurled by Aztec warriors. From there, the game constantly shifts perspective and mechanics, forcing you to adapt as you climb collapsing stairs, avoid falling stones, navigate trap-filled corridors, swim through piranha-infested waters, and cross a crumbling bridge with missing planks. Every stage feels deliberately unforgiving, turning simple actions into high-pressure tests of nerve. There’s no margin for error, and success comes only through memorisation, rhythm, and persistence. Paul Norman’s tense soundtrack reinforces the pressure, heightening the sense that each mistake could be your last.
