Auf Wiedersehen Monty – Did Monty’s European Tour Improve the Series?

Released in 1987 by Gremlin Graphics, Auf Wiedersehen Monty is the fourth entry in the Monty Mole series and one of the most ambitious platform adventures on the Commodore 64. Designed by Peter Harrap and Shaun Hollingworth, the game follows Monty Mole as he travels across Europe with a bold goal: earning enough money to buy his own Greek island, Montos. The game uses a flick-screen platform design spread across 80 interconnected screens laid out to resemble a map of Europe. Players explore countries such as France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, collecting Eurocheques and key items while avoiding traps, enemies, and environmental hazards. Navigation becomes a strategic challenge as players learn routes and screen connections across the continent. Each region introduces themed gameplay twists, including bullfighting hazards in Spain and alcohol effects in Germany that temporarily disrupt Monty’s controls.
