Archon – The C64 Chess Game Where the Pieces Fought Back
Released in 1983 by Free Fall Associates and published by Electronic Arts, Archon: The Light and the Dark is a pioneering hybrid that blends turn-based strategy with fast-paced real-time combat. Designed by Jon Freeman and Paul Reiche III, with programming by Anne Westfall, the game challenges players to command either the forces of Light or Dark in a battle for control of a magical board. The board resembles a chess layout, but instead of static captures, opposing pieces trigger one-on-one real-time battles when they meet. Each creature has unique movement patterns, strengths, and special abilities, making positioning and timing just as important as combat skill. Control is achieved by occupying five power points or eliminating the opposing army entirely. Light and Dark units offer distinct play styles, from agile and precise to powerful and aggressive, ensuring that no two matches play out the same.
