Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress – 22 Castles Between You and the Crown | C64
Released in 1985 by Activision for the Commodore 64, Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress is an ambitious action-adventure game designed and programmed by Tom Loughry. You set out on a quest to recover a stolen crown by navigating a dynamically generated world map filled with twenty-two castles, each containing unique layouts, hazards, and hidden treasures. Gameplay is presented from a top-down perspective, with every castle forming a maze of interconnected rooms. You must overcome traps, enemies, and environmental puzzles in order to progress. A variety of tools and items aid exploration and combat, including pistols, grappling hooks, magic carpets, and secret passages. Limited ammunition and careful resource management add a strong strategic element. The game features multiple difficulty levels and a built-in demonstration mode, both of which were advanced features for home computer games of the mid-1980s.
